Model Soldiers

Others Accumulated over the Years

Mexico - General Manuel Fernandéz Castrillòn

This is a King and Country product (#RTA 035).

Castrillon was a Major-General in the mexican army during the 19th Century. He was aide de camp to Sanata Anna during the Texas revolution, in Marrch, 1836. Apparently, it was Castrillòn who petitioned on numerous occasions (without much suucess) against the execution of prisioners, including the last few survivors at the Alamo.

Russia - 18th Century Imperial Infantry, Grenadier Kneeling firing

This is a model bought at the gift shop of the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg in 2011.

There do not seem to be many good quality models of Tsarist soldeirs generally available. And they seem even rarer in Russia itself.

This one was bought originally because it was available and at least representative. The name of the manufacturer and its provence was/is nowhere in evidence. Nor did any original box come with it. All of which leads me to think the production and sale of this model and the few others similar was a local intitiative.

There do not seem to be many good quality models of Tsarist soldeirs generally available. And they seem even rarer in Russia itself.

This one was bought originally because it seemed unusual and interesting, quite apart from the big battle axe.

Switzerland - Neuchâtel Regiment, 1807-13

This is a set of four Neuchâtelois Infantry in marching pose bought in Paris many, many years ago..

I bought them because they were, to my mind at least, interesting and unusual. Napoleon's Chief of Staff for most of era was General Louis-Alexandre Berthier, whom he made not only a Marshall but also Prince de Neuchâtel & Wagram.

$49.95 each or $179.95 for the set of four.

France - Maréchal Michel Ney

This is a model that I bought in France in 2005. I'm not sure who manufactured it.

Ney was one of Napoleon's most courageous and audacious Generals. He proved heroic on the 1812 march back from Moscow, but served Louis XVIII after Napoleon's first abdication.

He reportedly told the restored King that he would bring back Napoleon "in a cage", when he returned to France from Elba in 1815. He then joined Naopeon on the march back to Paris. He led the repeated, disastrous heavy cavalry charges against the British squares in the late afternoon at Waterloo.

After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Ney was executed under the restored Bourbon Regime, although some have argued that he escaped and ended up dieing peacefully in his bed in the U.S.A.
